What people are saying
This Malaysian chili sauce delivers bold, authentic Southeast Asian flavor with significant heat (8/10). Customers praised its versatility for cooking, marinating, and dipping, with "multi-layered flavours" and thick texture. The vegan, gluten-free formula uses no shrimp paste. Some found it pricier (~$14/jar) but worth it for the fresh taste.
- Bold, balanced, and comforting. The texture is thick, and the heat is just right.
- A perfect balance of spiciness and flavour. Highly recommended!
- Packed with flavour — not just heat. You can really taste the lemongrass and mango.

Aw thank you Kate!
Excellent!
Tried the Sambal sauce. Good heat and hits with a ton of flavor.
I had Lits’ sambal and it is a new favourite. It is a perfect balance of spiciness and flavour. I have tried the sambal sauce with seafood options like fried fish prawns and squid. Highly reccomended 😋
I really enjoyed having the Amma’s Malaysian Sambal sauce. It has a bold taste of southeast Asian flavor. I love the fact that it is versatile because you can use it to cook, marinade, dip, or spread. I used it as dip for my chicken and it tasted so good. Has a spicy tingly taste/acabar taste.

Loved adding this to my breakfast! I’ve been looking for a way to add a little more flavour in the morning and this definitely hit the spot! I’m always skeptical when I see spice ratings but I was pleasantly surprised to see this was definitely an 8/10 ! Absolutely recommend if you’re looking for some extra spice on any dish!

I absolutely love this sauce. I was not expecting it to be as spicy as it was, but the flavour is amazing! Very tasty! I dipped my avocado in it and I cannot wait to use it to marinate chicken.

As we say in Indonesia, eating without sambal is like eating without salt — it just feels incomplete.
That’s why I was so excited to receive this Amma’s Malaysian Sambal from Butterly in exchange for an honest review. As someone who grew up with sambal on the table, I couldn’t wait to give this a try.
For this meal, I paired Indonesian yellow spiced chicken with rice, lalapan (fresh veggies), and sambal. It’s a typical combo in many Indonesian homes. We usually enjoy it with sayur asem (tamarind soup) too, though I skipped it this time.
I used Amma’s Malaysian Sambal as a dip, and it instantly reminded me of the sambals I grew up with. The texture is thick, and the heat is just right. Bold, balanced, and comforting. My husband liked it too. He’s not picky with sambal, but he knows when one stands out.
Made with fresh and dried chilies, garlic, and shallots, this sambal is vegan, gluten free, and all natural. There are no preservatives or shrimp paste. Just bold Southeast Asian flavor. It’s also a local product, proudly made in Ontario, Canada.
Compared to store bought sambal oelek, this one tastes fresher and more balanced. I also prefer the texture. It’s thicker and richer, not watery like most commercial versions.
While I enjoyed it here as a dip, it honestly goes well with anything — nasi goreng (fried rice), stir fries, balado, marinades, or even as a spread.

I loved the multi-layered flavours in the sambal! Truly the perfect flavour bomb hotness 🔥
Would definitely try it with rice, noodles, for marinade, and in my salad dressings!
*I received this complimentary for review purposes. I love sambal and fell in love with the fresh flavours when I visited Indonesia a few years ago. Since coming back to Canada, the mainstream brand you can find at the grocery store does not satisfy that spicy craving anymore. When I discovered this sambal, I was surprised at how fresh the ingredients tasted. There is a spicy yet floral taste to this sambal, making it perfect for any bowl or as a dressing for salads. I checked their website and though this is on the pricier side (about $14 per jar), I'd be willing to splurge on this once a year!

Wooo this sauce has go some kick to it! I've had sambal sauces in the past but this is nothing like the ones I've had! I love the texture of this sauce. It's also cool that there is no shrimp paste in this one, makes it stand out from the other brands even more! It was a taaaad spicy on it's own for my son but i mixed it with mayo for him and added honey to balance out the heat and he loved it on his chicken! I'll definitely be buying this again as it's now become a staple pantry item for our family!

I’m obsessed and already eaten half a jar of this litssauce Amma’s Malaysian Sambal. It’s great on veg, meat, topping eggs, rice. This chilli sauce is amazing blend of heat and I’ve been adding it to everything I’ve been cooking the past couple of weeks. FYI this is vegan, most Sambal is made with shrimp paste and this doesn’t have any and it’s favourful as heck and perspective free (I get migraines with any preservatives)
-
I’m definitely getting more because this hot sauce is fantastic and I’ll be finished the jar by next week 🤣.

Lost in the Sauce- Amma’s Malaysian Sambal delivers bold, authentic flavour with every spoonful. The taste is rich and aromatic, blending savoury, sweet, and umami notes with a definite spicy kick that builds without overwhelming. It’s the kind of heat that lingers just enough to keep you going back for more. Makes my dish have that Malaysian flavour. Tried it on skewers and chicken and it's a hit!

Love this sauce. Love the spice level. Goes really well as a marinade or dip. Can't wait to try it with momo or samosa and my other favorite snacks. I definitely recommend to try it if you haven't so far.

Unlike traditional sambal belacan this version skips the shrimp paste, making it 100% vegan and gluten-free while still delivering layers of umami and spice .
Amma’s Malaysian Sambal is a pantry essential for anyone craving authentic Southeast Asian flavors with a modern, inclusive twist. Whether you’re a heat seeker or a flavor chaser, this sauce delivers on both fronts—with heartwarming backstory to boot.
Try it with coconut rice or as a glaze for grilled pineapple!

I recently tried their Ammas Sambal sauce. It is a Malaysian chili paste with a thick consistency. This is not the version of smabal with the shrimp paste. This is perfect for me since I can’t have shellfish. The sauce hits you with a bright tomato tang then the heat kicks in from Thai chili and ginger. They aren’t kidding when the bottle says 8/10 heat. I personally would add a pinch more salt to round it out. The sauce is good for marinades and in stir-fry or even as a soup base. I used it to make some airfry Sambal chicken and it was delicious! If you like heat, highly recommend it.

We marinated some chicken thighs with this sambal and threw them on the BBQ the flavour was unreal. Smoky a little sweet from the mango and just the right amount of heat when cooked. Paired it with fried rice and it was a full on win.
Then we tried it straight from the jar… and yeah it kicked us in the face a bit 😂 It’s definitely spicy. But not the kind that burns your soul you still get that lemongrass garlic and ginger shining through.
Texture’s chunky, thick, and super fresh nothing like those watery store-bought sambals. Made in Toronto from a family recipe and it actually tastes homemade.
Appreciate @lost.in.the.sauce.to for this one. We’ll be using it again maybe just not by the spoonful next time.

Tried the Sambal sauce. Good heat and hits with a ton of flavor.

The first bite tastes like coming home.
Amma's Malaysian Sambal is a heartfelt tribute to my mom, Siva, whose passion for food has always been about creating moments of togetherness. This signature blend was refined over time in her kitchen, and although she never got to see it launch officially, it carries her legacy of sharing love through cooking, in every jar. We made it to provide a taste of home away from home.
You taste bright lemongrass and ginger first. A little sweetness from the mango. Then the umami hits: that depth that makes you go in for another spoonful before you've finished the first. Finally, a lasting but friendly kick from dried Thai chilis. A 'noticeable punch' you'll feel, not fear.

Real ingredients. No shrimp paste.
Everyone gets to eat.
Most traditional sambals are built on shrimp paste: beautiful flavour, but it locks out vegans, vegetarians, and anyone with shellfish allergies. Amma's keeps every bit of depth and complexity by leaning hard on kesar mango pulp, lemongrass, ginger, red onion, and a careful Thai chili blend. You can put this in front of anyone at the table.
No fillers. No artificial colours. No preservatives doing the heavy lifting instead of real ingredients. Just a thick, fragrant, flavour-packed paste that looks the way real sambal should, and tastes like someone made it for you.

The jar that earns its spot in your home pantry.
This isn't a novelty bottle you try once and forget. Amma's Sambal is built for real life: weeknight noodles, hosting brunches, BBQ marinades, 'what's-in-the-fridge' stir-fries, Tuesday eggs, late-night fried rice. Cook, marinade, dip or spread: Amma's Sambal goes beyond just one-time use.
Cook the full Amma's spread.

How spicy is Amma's compared to Sriracha?
Noticeably hotter: Sriracha sits around 4/10 for most palates, Amma's is 7/10. But more importantly, it's a thicker paste with much deeper flavour: lemongrass, ginger, mango pulp, and umami carry the heat. You taste the food first; the burn arrives like a friendly reminder, not a punch.
Is it safe for people with shellfish allergies?
Yes. Unlike most traditional sambals, which are built on shrimp paste, Amma's contains NO shrimp paste and NO shellfish of any kind. Fully vegan, gluten-free, shellfish-safe.
What's the difference between sambal and hot sauce?
Hot sauce is thin: drizzle, dip, splash. Sambal is a thick chili paste: spoon it, stir it into cooking, marinate with it, spread it. Amma's is built to be cooked with.
How long does it last?
Shelf-stable for 2 years. The best-before date is printed on every bottle. Best refrigerated after opening for peak flavour.
